Alkaline Roots opened as a small doorway shop on Barking Road, stacked with tropical fruit, sugar cane and fresh herbs, and it's grown into a proper local fixture. The shelves carry what a Caribbean or West African kitchen actually needs: soursop, breadfruit, yam, plantain, sorrel, alongside sea moss, herbal tonics and an alkaline-diet pantry inspired by natural, plant-based living.
It's owner-run day to day, with regular customers who've been coming for years for the produce, the herbal remedies, and, as more than one review puts it, a genuinely friendly, unhurried shop to browse.
